ELA/ ENL Core Ideas

My goal in providing literacy instruction is give students the tools to become strong readers and writers. I do so by differentiating materials and activities that serve as a conquerable challenge, meaning something students are capable of doing, but still challenges them. My instruction includes

  • Open-ended conversations and discussions
  • Opportunities to make connections
  • Guided reading groups and whole group lessons
  • Project and research based learning

What This Looks Like in a Classroom

Attached is a lesson I created for 5th Grade gen ed. and ENL students. This lesson was a part of the HMH curriculum, and was part of a unit that has a focus on mystery texts. In this lesson students learned about myths, and learned how to debunk or disprove myths by analyzing claims made by the author of a text, and creating a logical explanation to disprove the myths. This lesson incorporated modeling, small group instruction, differentiation for ENL students, opportunities for problem-solving and critical thinking, as well as a oral presentation piece.
