Math Core Ideas

I strive to ensure that students not only understand what they are doing in math, but also why it works. My approach is methodical, guiding students through each step while tailoring instruction to the individual skills each student needs to progress. I incorporate a variety of resources including manipulatives, hands-on resources, visual aids, and technology, to make learning a meaningful experience.

What This Looks like in the Classroom

This is a lesson I created during my 5th grade student teaching placement. This lesson was implemented after I had taught students how to multiply decimals and whole numbers. Many students felt comfortable with the topic but still needed more practice, some students needed to be re-taught the material, and some students felt they understood the content well and needed a challenge. This lesson supports the needs of all of these kinds of learners and has carefully chosen and created activities for the three groups of students. These activities include the use of technology, a math riddle, and real-world short answer questions. All of the students were asked to reflect on the activity they engaged in, in the form of an exit ticket. Students were asked if they still had questions about the topic, or if there was anything that they were still confused about. I used this information to plan my next lesson and remediate students who still struggled to understand the content.
